Double Bunk in Caravan

With our family expanding, we faced a challenge of adding another berth in our caravan, but I did not want to make it permanent.

A couple of options are available, of which one is simply to add a bunk to the single berth. We however did not want to cause any permanent markings on the interior of the caravan .

I found this very simple solution while wondering through Outdoor Warehouse

The DiscoBed ( www.discobed.com ) is a simple but very effective bed system found at Outdoor Warehouse ( www.outdoorwarehouse.co.za/ ).

The system consists of a couple of poles, that fit into each other and then into round plastic discs that sit on top of the end pieces of the bed. Assembly is very simple and the solution looks very durable.

In our Gypsey Splash ( www.jurgensci.co.za ), the DiscoBed was 5mm to long to fit over the existing single berth. However the long pole system that make the length of the bed system was easily shortened by the required amount. Shortening it just enough that it still fits tightly ensures that it does not fall all over the place while towing.

We added two high foam mattresses and now we have a double bunk system for our girls.

Just stating the obvious I would like to add that cutting the DiscoBed probably voids any warranties or returns, so make sure that it will work before proceeding. Also be careful not to put pressure on the outside walls of your caravan, they will crack and break.

Lastly please remember kids can fall off the system in their sleep. The bed does drop inward a bit under weight which helps, but rather make an alternate plan, a suggestion is using the back upright cushions of the seats to serve as a railing and avoid the children falling off in their sleep.
