Annual Commemoration Service at the SA Defence Force Wall of Remembrance
DIE SA WEERMAG MUUR VAN HERINNERING
Die SAW Muur van Herinnering is met vergunning van die Direksie van die Voortrekkermonument en Natuurreservaat (VTM), ’n maatskappy sonder winsmotief, opgerig. Dit is moontlik gemaak deur privaat skenkings en fisiese bydraes. Geen staatsgeld is daarvoor gebruik nie.
Die Muur is opgerig om erkenning te gee aan lede van die SAW wat gedurende die tydperk 31 Mei 1961 (Republiekwording) tot 27 April 1994 (totstandkoming van die SANW) hul lewens in diens van die land gegee het. Persone wie se name met ‘n asterisk gemerk is, is gedood in operasionele omstandighede. Die naamlys sal jaarliks aangevul word om voorsiening te maak vir moontlike regstellings en toevoegings.
Die volle raad van die Tshwane Metro Munispaliteit het die oorplasing van die Troepie-standbeeld vanaf Fort Klapperkop na die SAW Muur van Herinnering goedgekeur en hulle word opreg daarvoor bedank. By die diens van 2014 word daar ook ’n spesiale granietpaneel onthul om hulde te bring aan die families, veral die vrouens en kinders, van lede wat van 1961-1994 in die SAW gedien het.
Gedurende vermelde tydperk is bykans bomenslike eise aan die SAW gestel. Die self-opofferende bydraes van persone soos dié wat op die muur herdenk word, en hul agtergeblewe naasbestaandes, het gehelp om die SAW een van die bestes in Afrika te maak en tyd te koop vir ‘n politieke oplossing vir die komplekse situasie in Suider-Afrika.
THE SA DEFENCE FORCE WALL OF REMEMBRANCE
The SADF Wall of Remembrance has been erected with the consent of the Board of Directors of the Voortrekker Monument and Nature Reserve, a company not for gain. It has been made possible through private donations and contributions in kind. No State funds were used to this end.
The Wall has been erected to pay tribute to the members of the SADF who lost their lives in service of the country over the period 31 May 1961 (the coming of the Republic) and 27 April 1994 (the birth of the SANDF). The names of the members who died under operational circumstances, are indicated with an asterisk. Corrections and additions to the name list will be done on an annual basis.
The full Council of the Tshwane Metro Municipality have approved the relocation of the Troepie Statue from Fort Klapperkop to the SADF Wall of Rememberance, and we would like to thank them most sincerely for that. At the service of 2014 a special plaque will also be unveiled to pay homage to the families, especialy the women and children, of members who served in the SADF during the period 1961 to 1994.
During this period virtually superhuman demands were placed on the SADF. The self sacrificing contributions by people, like those who are commemorated on this wall, and their relatives, helped to make the SADF one of the best in Africa and to buy time for a political solution to the complex situation in Southern Africa.
